System Sensor — Fire & Life Safety
System Sensor is one of the leading OEM commercial fire security companies in North America. The key features of the new alarms and detectors were backward compatibility and customizability — products that satisfy both the architect and the contractor.

The problem
Life-safety hardware is specified by architects and installed by contractors, and the two want different things: a quiet ceiling and wall presence versus fast, forgiving installation across an enormous range of existing back boxes.
Approach
Sketch exploration covered both the audible/visible notification appliances and the intelligent detector, then converged through concept refinement into preliminary surface CAD.
Customizability was designed into the trim: extra trim rings remedy an ever-growing SKU count, and housings interchange with common base components so one core unit serves many box types. Lettering and lens options are interchangeable rather than separate tools.
Outcome
Manufactured notification appliances and detectors now installed in commercial buildings and schools, with a production exploded assembly documenting base, PCB housing, chamber, and customizable trim.
Contribution
- Sketch exploration across appliance and detector families
- Concept refinement and variation studies
- Preliminary and production surface CAD
- Trim, lens, and lettering customization strategy
