Case study 03
HTC Vive — Advanced VR HMD & Controllers
Advanced concept work for a consumer virtual-reality head-mounted display and its controllers, where the hardware has to disappear on the head for an hour at a time.
Industrial design / Wearables / Human factors

- Industrial design, human factors, CMF
- Output
- Advanced concept HMD and controllers
The problem
A head-mounted display is a wearable before it is a computer. Mass sits in front of the face, heat has to leave the visor, and the same product must fit a wide range of head and face geometries.
Approach
Design decisions were driven by weight distribution and facial fit: balancing the visor against the rear cradle, working the venting into the surface language, and detailing the controllers so grip and tracking geometry stay comfortable through long sessions.
Outcome
A resolved visor and controller design language — perforated venting, a single continuous edge highlight, and a soft interior interface — carried through form development and CMF direction.

- Advanced concept industrial design
